An empire founded by war has to maintain itself by war.
-Charles de Montesquieu
History (pre-885)
The Treaty of Verdun, signed in 843, ended the years long Carolingian Civil War. The war was a result of a succession crisis at the Great Charlemagne's death. His three sons, Charles the Bald, Ludwig der Deutsche, and Lothair I had struggled for control of the Frankish throne. Finally, in 843, the treaty of Verdun was signed. The treaty divided the empire into three seperate realms, being West Francia (France), given to Charles the Bald. Middle Francia (or Lotharingia) was ceded to Lothair I. Finally, East Francia was allotted to Ludwig der Deutsche. In 845, Charles and Ludwig had signed a secret treaty to partition Lotharingia. War by war did they overrun the country, until Lotharingia suffered a humiliating defeat in the Battle (and siege) of Liege, where their final stand was. After this, both the kingdoms of Louis and Charles had held a mutual festival in honor of the surrender.

In the next update (this was the prelude). We will concentrate on the ongoing Frankish-Bulgarian Wars and why you don't pick on the Germans
