I thought it was time to say hello - I'm here and alive. I will make a new big website with Simarillion for you. I hope now - you all know what I'm talking about.

First I will hear some new fresh ideas from you.
This is now on the wishlist:
- Download Center
- "Open" Community under one big website, all Communites have their own specific rights and are free.
- Blog
- Forum
- "City Journal" Blog

That's really easy to understand: This is not my normal nickname - so he was confused. I wrote him a PN - "...'ll Give you three guesses."

Just in case there is any confusion among Simmania members, in case you are wondering, I checked and confirmed that SimcityMania is not a clone of Simarillion. Don't be confused, please.

I would need to talk to Mayorm about building a file exchange for the site. I've been doing that for a while. I've been working out the details with Simarillion, and this might have the potential to be STEX-class. I have high hopes for this idea.

I'm still talking with Simarillion on the details. It seems to be going great so far, but again, I need Mayorm's permission.

Simarillion told me that we would be able to set it up so that users could upload their own work. This is definitely a plus.

Well, no. It's not a clone of mine. SimCityMania is the programmer working with me on the project. He simply hadn't told me that he registered here and under which nickname.
To check who was behind the post I played stupid for a moment and he confirmed his identity with a PM. So everything is ok. We will keep you updated as progress is made.

Mayorm: He is actually planning to create a site that hosts multiple file exchanges for multiple sites. Simarillion is very interested in making an exchange for Simmania. Me and Josh have been working with Simarillion in an attempt to create the exchange. We agreed not to move forward for Simmania until we had your permission.

Simarillion is offering to set up a file exchange, giving us not only our own portal, but our own site. He says that SimcityMania is his programmer, so we wouldn't have to program the site. We would have to build the file exchange there, and then link Simmania and the exchange site together. This might require a minor edit on Simmania in order to post some kind if fancy link on the homepage to make it obvious that the file exchange is there. That shouldn't be too difficult. It's hard to imagine that there would be problems with that.

The only major disadvantage that I can see is that users would have to register separately for the file exchange. SC4Devotion.com has the same problem. People are used to it. We could change that if we wanted to move the entire site over (assuming that Simmania has its own FTP address. If it doesn't, then we can't move the site). I really don't want to move the site unless Mayorm does. (I'd probably get in big trouble if I moved the site)


So, what I'm asking, Mayorm, is do we have permission to move forward with the project? I could probably handle working with the details with Simarillion and SimcityMania. I have very high hopes for this project. I think that it probably would be a few months before it would be ready, according to SimcityMania (January 2011, he says), but I think that it is the best offer yet.

Well, obviously you would have FTP access to the moved site, remaining the Admin.
The question was if you had a FTP here that would allow for all the data to be downloaded and transferred to the new site.

Well, forumotion sites don't have FTPs, considering that an FTP would allow for the site to be dlled and uploaded (I suppose) to the new server. FM doesn't do that, and I think you would have to get them or your new host to move it for you.

Well, it looks like we would have to start over if we wanted to move the site. The last 9 or so months have been spent rebuilding the site from the last time we did that.

First of all there are a few things to consider through all this....

Forumotion SUCKS. Limited, not to mention it is EXTREMELY hard to get help for it. In fact, it is even impossible for any user to transfer a subdomain of forumotion, the FM staff would have to. You would have to have access to their database or so I hear, and I am sure they have "plenty" other things to do. It took GoDaddy 2 days to delete a page on a family member's site, imagine how long it would take to transfer an entire domain! Heck, they may not even do it at all.

Second, Blake is right. My site was built about some 4-5 months ago, and several times it has had issues. I have spent most of my time in the ACP there just fixing the site, and moving it is a huge hassle, not to mention, moving an entire domain might cause issues, it did Mayorm.

Compatibility is a thing I wanted to ask Simarillion about... will it support phpbb (2 AND 3), PunBB, Invision? Also what forum software comes standard with the service.

I know for sure that I am moving Simcityville (my forums) to use Simarillion's service cuz, like I said, FM sucks, and I can actually get as much help as I need (probly unlike most other hosting services)

Well, honestly, I personally would think that moving the site altogether would be a better option, but Mayorm gets to decide that, not me.

Yea, the one that uses spyware/tracking cookies to give you bounceback targeting ads that can't be removed under admin panel.

OK, idk if they use spyware or not, but it is the only thing I can think of. If they can give you bounceback targeting. However not to many sites opt into this so it shouldn't be an issue

May not be to you, but in my opinion (and idk if this is actually true) but tracking cookies are a form of spyware.

Posting things against forumotion is NOT the point of this topic, given that we are talking about a file exchange here, I was just stating a fact about why I wanted to use Simarillion's service, which THAT is what the topic is about. So, that said, I was stating WHY I wanted to use Simarillion's service. And in my honest opinion, if I can't express my sight and opinion, especially ones related to the topic at hand, why am I even involved in this? I'm sorry to vent like this, but that is my opinion.

And I take full responsibility for what I said above.

Well, we don't want to get in trouble with FM. Ads aren't necessarily pleasant, but how else would FM make money off of being a free site host? I think I'll take the ads.

Even still, it isn't everyday that you get an offer like what Simarillion has given, but as far as "normal" free hosts go, I think FM clearly scores at the top.

And cookies? 99.99% of them are overreacted to. They are no harm to anyone, and most of them are there either to gather browsing behaviors for marketing techniques in a non-harmful way or to improve your web experience. (Just google "tracking cookies" to find this stuff out. )In fact, automatic log-ins owe their existence to cookies, and auto log-ins are quite useful for me, personally.

I don't think that cookies are anything to worry about.

Well, you guys know that I've voted with my feet. I might have overreacted while I was griping at FM, it isn't that bad a host, but I was frustrated about stuff at the time and was grumpy. . But even still, with as good of a offer Simarillion is giving, it isn't worth using FM.

I am also quick to point out that FM isn't really the best you can get, I was researching other hosts and Forumer and Freeforums seem to be better.
