It's a heavily modified eMachines office PC. The OS X installation is a hack I have concocted as opposed to buying an overpriced (Mac)computer with picky hardware.

Nice! I have an Emachines also, and the only modifications I put in there were a bigger hard drive (last one crashed), better video card, and the PSU to go along with the video card. I've always thought it would be interesting to have a hackintosh though.

Yes I also have removed the original PSU and installed on old but trustworthy PSU from an older computer. The Hackintosh scene on the system is great by the way

Yes, it sux to the max. I mean, it's a good OS, but I use it like Win 7, I mainly just use the desktop. I mean, I originally just wanted Win 7, but it was when they were selling Win 8 for like $20, so I just went with that.

If your video card is using any of it, setting the video memory to be lower or getting a proprietary card could get you a few hundreg megabytes back. That's usually only the case with integrated graphics though. If you already have a card, there's not much you can really do without reinstalling with 64 bit. (gotta love microsoft )

LOL, yup, I knew I had been screwed with the 32-but. But wouldn't the 64-bit yield even less usable RAM?

64 bit allows the software to address RAM that requires an address longer than 32 bits. It so turns out that the maximum amount of ram that can be mapped out and addressed with 32 bits is 4GB. Windows reserves some of this for video RAM and stuff like that (unfortunately) and that leaves you with about 3GB.

As far as whether using 64 bit would give you more usable RAM, I'm not sure, since you have 4 GB of ram. I do know that for windows to reserve 1 GB of ram for other purposes is a bit strange, but then again, video memory counts for the 4gb as well.

As far as I know, with a 4gb rig, reinstalling with 64 bit should give you at least some extra usable RAM, but I'm not positive.

I will not upgrade to the newer operating systems, they are too "mobile" for my stationary desktop Hackintosh. Windows 8 totally ruined any chance of me upgrading anything.

Due to technical limitations, it is not possible to upgrade from a 32 bit operating system to a 64 bit operating system. Unfortunately, reinstalling fresh is the only way to go from 32 bit to 64 bit, which I think is a bit unfair considering that 32 bit is getting outdated

Agreed. I don't like the whole mobile feel that much either. I found a 90 day trial and played with it, and needless to say, it didn't feel right at all. i think I'm sticking with Windows 7, at least for a while.

The inner workings of Windows 8 seem to be streamlined so it runs smoother for me. And startup only takes about 10 seconds, that took about 30 on 7, even with an SSD.

I don't find myself using metro apps or the start screen in general very often though

All that said I don't really like it any more than I do 7, it's just a matter of preference for me and I don't want to bother reverting to 7 at this point.
