So... I am working on a new portal for my forum which is hosted with forumotion. Seeing that simmania is as well, I was wondering if anyone has used javascripts, specifically jquery. I am by no means a web designer, I simply downloaded a free template, uploaded the jquery-files to a free script host and that was that.

The feature worked in the "preview" of the page before I had ever saved the page. Once I saved it, however, it stopped working.
So you know, the thing that stops working is a picture slider, like the one on the homepage of Simtropolis.

(If need be, I can provide a link to the template...)

I have thought about posting on the support forum, but thought I would come here first. If nobody has any ideas, I may just use a different template. Plenty out there that look good.

Thanks!

How are you putting your picture slider on the portal?

I created an HTML page and I am using a custom HTML/CSS template which includes a photo slider.

Sorry for the double post, but it has been more than 24 hours. Smile

Update: Figured out what was wrong. Since this is a theme I downloaded, the HTML and CSS were separate files. I merged the CSS into the HTML page (and used style=css etc.), which is why the photo slider isn't working. It was also referencing a non-existant CSS file. Derp. Since forumotion is picky and your code for a page has to be in one HTML page, the theme probably won't work.

Oi, silly me. Razz

This is where FTP would come in handy.. the HTML can reference the CSS file (although you'd need to edit the code to point to the directory where the CSS file is).
thing is.. if forumotion would allow you to actually make CSS sheets and reference to them in HTML code, it'd make it a lot easier for you and it'd make it easier to carry out most of the renovations over here too. But that would require forumotion to give you the directory name where the CSS is, which that information is locked down and secured in a private database...

Exactly, an FTP would be great. The HTML already renferences the CSS file, and I know enough on how to change it. I actually uploaded everything to my free webhost account to play around with and voila! Worked perfectly.

But yea, I seriously doubt forumotion would ever do that, considering how they always love to interject they own the database. I *almost* always see that on their support forums. And they aren't always polite about it... Ehh

I found a few that work when the CSS and HTML are together, but I don't like it as much. I may just ditch the photo slider and keep the remainder of the template, just display only one photo.

In response to forumotion owning the database (they actually probably don't) I'd actually love to perhaps purchase a barebone computer and use it as a server.. but I don't know the specs on those.

I could always use my PC but I don't leave it on at night. I could leave it on but.. the fan LEDs are just way too bright and you can't turn them off Razz

Right now I run a site that uses forumotion (a minecraft site to be exact) and I'd love to have it hosted using a webhost but that's something I can't afford right now..

Yeah, I am not into paid hosting right now either. Razz I've previously mentioned I have a test forum with SMFNew. Well I found out you have the ability to purchase your database to move to another host or software. They also have paid hosting and allows full back-end access to your site.

I'd assume that means I can access an FTP and create a portal. While it sucks that is only with paid hosting, at least it is an option. The more I look around, the more I dislike forumotion. But oh well, I'm stuck with 'em. For now anyways. Razz

is it FM that allows you to purchase your database? or SMFnew?
I think the best option is to use standard free hosting but the free hosts annoy me in such a way i actually find myself looking for excuses to use FM

CSS is a huge problem with forumotion in case you haven't noticed Razz

really all you need to do is host your CSS with a free host.. and use HTML to reference it, like what link was mentioning doing

SMFNew allows you to purchase database.
The free hosts really aren't great, and there are generally bandwidth limits. Ehh Probably wouldn't hit them, but I wouldn't want to test that theory. Razz SMFNew is like forumotion, but a little more constricted for free hosting. But the bonus is they have paid hosting, which allows full access. That, and it runs a better software - SMF. Smile
