edit: dammit.. posted in the wrong board.. move this thread if needed.

SC4 has outlived many other games.. it's entirely playable and each time it's different instead of games where you do one thing.. and it's done. Think of Skyrim.. I enjoy it.. but after hours and hours in.. it just gets to be the same go pick up crap or go rescue crap from some place or person.. being able to play it over and over and over without anything being boring is the beauty of sandboxes.

But SC4 is generally dead. A lot of people are in denial about it unfortunately.. but think of how old this game is. Even two years is a long time for games.. which is why I said that SC4 outlived several other games.

Look at our SC4 forum here.. I was looking for a reference tutorial I wrote quite a while ago (oct 2010). I was expecting it to be on the last page.. waaaay towards the back. It's two posts up from the first page. The last post in the SBT board was last July just to say that SBT is dead.. last post in the WW2 board was an empty showcase thread. The Other sites and unions board is full of unions and places that simply aren't taking off (I despise unions but I'll try to be unbiased as possible). Unions have become too much work and are frankly too dramatic for it to be any fun.. it's nothing much more than a chore. It's a problem when you try to make an RPG out of any game that's not intended for roleplaying. And SC4.. it's not intended for multiplayer period. SC5 will do game servers so that might help that issue.

Over here the forum games and new members board have been more active than the SC4 one. On larger sites I've seen more Minecraft and Skyrim threads than SC4 ones. As far as SC5 goes, I'm still reserved about it honestly, but it's received enough publicity that it might bring back the SC4 community.. at least temporarily.

Point is.. SC4 has run its course. But if Simmania is going to continue growing it's best that it incorporates other interests of the time. It would mean a major site overhaul.. perhaps even renaming.. but it's one thing to do to keep this place growing.. and make members more active. And this is one of the very few forums that I still actually want to stay involved in.

Well, SC4 is still one pretty good game. It is a classic, you know D:

True some sites there are more Skyrim and Minecraft threads, but they are also doing SC4.

As in unions, no comment.

Yes, I know. I wasn't saying it's a bad game, I'm just saying that it's in the archives.. or at least headed there.

There are more than that... believe me. Sites like SimMania haven't been too successful as an SC4 site as of late is what I'm getting at.

I admit we have been slow, but we are growing Smile and considering most (if not all) of our members belong to the big sites such as ST, SC4D, Simpeg, and numerous small ones, we don't really have an active totally devoted following

Simmania definitely has more committed members than many other communities of its size. It's part of what's helped us survive three years. To me, there is no replacement for Simmania.

SC4 is still alive but I think its following is trending downwards. It seems the golden period finished about 2008. There are still many awesome BATs, maps, mods, etc., being made but the core group continues to shrink. Eventually the game will die a final death when it is no longer compatible with current operating systems - who knows when that will be though. Then there will just be people like me keeping hold of old computers just to play SC4.

The other option is that SC2013 kills SC4 off, although from what I have seen of SC2013 it looks embarrassingly bad, like SC Societies bad.

Speaking of no longer compatible with operating systems.. I'm running the windows 8 RP, and SC4 won't install on it. Copying the files directly off the disks works though. As far as LE and BAT goes, unless the game is installed "properly" they won't work. Other than those major setbacks, the game itself runs on win8 (although crashes way too often). Win8 is scheduled for release later this year so I think this is another reason why SC4 is coming to an end.

Nothing lasts forever Ehh

Kind of like this thread in the General Discussion board, it's now in the SimCity board where it should be Razz

(Probably) Unrelated, but I really think Windows 8 is a failure of an OS Razz. It seems more targeted towards the tablet users as opposed to the classic mouse and keyboard setup.

And, this might interest you too.

Back to the topic, no offense to anyone, but I think the community itself has shot itself in the foot lately. Especially with the debut of SC4D Premium, the drama between unions, and some other stuff. That's all I have to say

(BTW, SC2013's DRM? WTF EA?)

Windows 8 isn't a "failure" of an OS, it's just targeted at tablet users. I'd reckon most of us won't be upgrading this October (I probably won't)

Back on subject, the fact remains that SC4's following is coming close to an end. SC2013 (unless it's not as bad as it seems) won't do much to help that either.

I don't think I'll be using Windows 8 anytime soon.

We could still attempt to throw a distro of Linux under a virtual machine and run SC4 under Wine if SC4 turns out to be completely incompatible with Windows 8. That's not ideal either, but at least it would work.

Or a VM with windows 7, which would be easier.
And SC4 is technically "incompatible" with win8 but it still works.
Just the installer has problems. it freezes at the point where it should ask to insert disk 2. funny thing too.. the ODD won't even eject to let you put the next disk in Razz

True that... The community has shot itself in the corner. The community stumbled, the community suffered, but I think out there there is still a glimmer of hope. We still have time to make everything right Razz (like more friendly relationships and some other stuff).

Windows 8 Razz
